Remote Glow

Dave,

Yes - used on an OS 140.  Shorting is prevented by "sleeving" the alligator clip with a little bit of fuel tubing.  The fuel tubing also serves to protect/strengthen the attachment of the wire to to alligator clip.  I think I did replace the piece of fuel tubing as preventive maintenance around 1,000 flights.

The alligator clip I used is available (in the US) at Radio Shack - about $3.99 for a package of "test leads" or "jumper leads" contains about a dozen of the alligator clips.  The alligator clip is nearly horizontal on the top of the cylinder head fins.  This setup would would not work as well on an engine with deeper cooling fins (ie, Webra) - but in that case I think a cotter pin or the "serrated" type of pin used to hold RC car bodies on could be bent into a "Z" shape and substituted for the alligator clip.

Definitely a little bit of a contrast to use a $0.19 alligator clip as part of a remote glow system on the $$$ 140 EFI.  <G>.

    If you want to try something that is cheap, simple, and readily available, you could try a small ring type connector attached to the engine lug and a small alligator clip attached to the plug.  1500 flights and counting for me................500+ for Dad who I got the idea from...........

    Of course, without "Tettra" or "MK" on the label, it doesn't have that high tech, hard to get, high-priced, exotic appeal  <G>

      I personally didn't have good luck with the Tettra. As others have suggested I bought both the Hanger 9 and the Tettra and replaced the Hanger 9  glow connector with the Tettra. This worked fine until I had to remove it a couple of times. After that it would no longer stay clipped on. I tried adjusting the spring that grabs the top of the glow plug, but I could never again get it to stay on. I have a never used Tettra glow connector that I compared to the older one to make sure that the spring was still correctly in place and I could see nothing wrong.

      After this I went back to the Hanger 9 connector (that I'd removed in the first place) and it's been working fine, but I only have around 30 flights on it. 

      BTW, Art Wagner makes some glow connectors that seem to work great. I'll be trying one of those next.

        The best one seems to be the Tettra connector.  I used the Hanger 9 remote kit and installed the Tettra connector on it.

          I installed my first remote glow connector and the glow wire broke after about a dozen flights, also the McDaniels unit will not handle most popular foriegn plugs and some sold as domestic brands. Is there a satisfactory solution for soft mounted engines ?
