[NSRCA-discussion] El Nino canopy

Hey Ken,

 

The clear is a PPG Concept 2000 clear.  Not sure that specific clear is
available anymore...but I'm sure there is something comparable...haven't
painted in a while, but I'm getting ready to again with the new Brio.
I'll need to see what's out there to work with.

Mark,

I had heard that either you or Bob had the molds.  I am going to try
your fix first, before I go through the replacement process.  Leave it
to me to take a beautiful plane, that you kept that way for years, and
mess it up in the first week.  I believe my wife made a comment, to you,
on how long my planes stay prestine, but it has never happened before my
first trip to the field, until now.

 

One more thing, what did you use, as the clear coat, the first time?

 

Thanks to everybody who replied, I'm learning, now if I could just learn
to walk.

	No need to consider making molds, they already exist.  Bob
Pannell has them. If you truly wanted a "new" one...I'm sure I could get
Geoff to "pull" you a new clear canopy, but I think we'd need to talk to
Bob Pannell about laying up the center fiberglass piece that holds it,
if you need a new one of those.  

	 

	As for fixing...you'll notice that the canopy in that plane is
both tinted and clear coated.  That's because the original "pull" was
horrible and had a lot of streaks and scratches in it.   It won't be
perfect, but if you can us a clear canopy glue to seal it, you can
actually SAND (wet sand with 600 or higher) the ridge smooth, and if you
respray clear...voila...it's smooth and clear again.  The clear coat
"fills" all the scratches from sanding.  

	 

	Again...it's not perfect, but you'd be surprised how well it

	I just came home with my new El Nino Saturday.  Today I had the
canopy off and was nosing around the inside checking out the setup.

	 

	I leaned over the bench and heard a crack, I had just leaned on
the canopy and put a 4 inch crack in it, lengthways on the top.  

	 

	The question I have is, is there a good way to repair it,
without using thin CA, because of the fogging that CA will cause?

	 

	Or does anybody have a canopy that they would be willing to part
with?
