I see a lot of people at meets plugging in their ailerons but never put a safety keeper on them. To me, this is a no brainer... You take a very high risk of having a connection come loose, or pull apart during a snap or etc. For the couple of grams they add, and the few seconds they take to put on I will continue to use them.
