<P>As Tom explained how it works in Australia, FAI is the destination class.Those who have the desire to compete on that level advance in that direction. In the USA I think participation in FAI is thought of as where the best of the best gravitate to. Many who have the drive to compete but will never advance to the point that they will be seriously competitive in FAI choose Masters as their destination, and it follows on down the line to the other classes depending on ability and desire of each individual. That being the case and if we compare our system and rules to theirs Then Masters is the destination class and each individual reguardless of his desire, ability and intrest is forced in that direction. This being true those who must move up to a class that is above their ability and desire will likely drop out.</P>
<P>As in FAI if Masters is our destination class then the rules controling design, size and weight etc.must apply to that class. so long as we have rules that force people to move up we can expect dropouts.</P>
<P>It seems to me that we may be transmitting a message weather intended or not to those who lack ability and desire to proceed to masters as well as those who may be attracted to pattern, that this is an eletist group so even if they have the desire to try it what's the use, because not only do they not have the desire / ability to proceed to the masters level they must have an airplane which meets the requirements of that class even to try it.</P>
<P> People have a choice to choose what intrests them and in most cases will not commit to something which has restrictions and goals That are beyond their ability and desire. So are we as a group making rules so rigid ie. forced move up, weight, size ect. for classes below the masters class that result in eliminating those who otherwise would fly pattern if they could set their own goal's?</P>
