The latest planes are engineered to fly yards better. You can probably afford them better this day and time than back then. What I really like is the challenge to trim one of these planes , having learned what I know about it from AMA flying, and make them perform well. The folks said it "wasn't competitive" and "probably wouldn't win" and after looking at the pictures of the SPA contests on the list, about all I saw was an airplane called the "Daddy Rabbit" which hadn't even been thought of when I took my "hiatus" from R/C. <BR>So, rather than build an airplane I didn't want, I decided to go pattern, because the airplanes were just beginning to look good, and different from one another. I sure couldn't say that in the days of the Sequel, SL-1, Jekyll, Dr. Jekyll Ph.D.. etc. <BR>Now, with the stuff that's out, I'd rather be a non-winner with airplanes that I like, than a non winner with an airplane I don't particularly want. <BR>But.........still and all.............I love the SPA concept. As an aside, I would really enjoy some kind of a contest with kindred souls that would let me employ an Astro-Hog, and be reasonably competitive. Always been a sentimental favorite with me; won a lot with it in the 50's and early 60's, and was there at it's (Astro-Hog's) birth. Keep it to say, 10 maneuvers. Would make judging a lot easier. Could retain more pattern pilots as they age!? As a % of RC pilots we are a decimal point! That scares me.
