<DIV>Providing information to observers about what is going on doesn't
necessarily mean there will be distracting cheering during a flight. just
think of all the whispering going on at golf tourneys. Without information
about what is happening, the standings, what is at stake, who is flying, how
they are doing, etc. there is no reason a spectator would tolerate one of our
contests for more than 15 minutes.</DIV>
<DIV> Golf is not the only comparison. Nascar is another that
has been made. It is boring to watch cars drive real fast more than the
first 25 laps. It is only when you know the drivers, choose a favorite,
listen to the radio chatter, etc. that it gets excitiing.</DIV>
<DIV> Almost every sport has a public way to display numbers, usually the
score. Doesn't seem like it would be hard or expensive to find an existing
display (from gymnastics, swimming, or such) that could display judges
scores. If Earl's right at previous attempts at this made it more fun, I'm
for it.</DIV>

<DIV>I believe it was at the 1976 TOC on Sunday afternoon when I was well out
it, a bunch of my friends (?) starting cheering after every one of my
maneuvers. I kind of liked it but I heard later that some of the other
folks didn't. I don't know if they thought it affected the judges or
what. </DIV>

<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>About 20 years ago there was an attempt to hookup with spectators more
by having a rotating pointer on a 0-10 scale behind each judge. Helpers
moved the pointer to indicate the score assigned to each maneuver in real
time. This was used at the Huntsville Team Selection Tournament in 1981, and
I found it made watching much more enjoyable. I'm not sure why it went away,
staff requirement, shy judges, etc.?</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Some may feel it puts too much pressure on the judges, but what about
"judge confidence"? Add cheering or jeering and some might recalibrate, but
silent observation shouldn't be a problem. Maybe one indicator per
flightline, posting the average score for each maneuver? I know, logistics
make it difficult, but not for brainstorming the notion.</DIV>
