Installation went something like this: You bolted
the engine, spinner back-plate, spacer, and mount together; tacked the Lord
mounts on the (whatever) solid mount backwards, held the fuse vertically so as
not to distort the final set-up, tacked the spinner/spacer in place; then
brought the firewall up to the Lord mounts, tacked them to it along with the
firewall to the fuse--marked around the Lord mounts so you'd have something to
draw centerlines with, break it all apart, draw centerlines and drill, mount the
blind nuts(or?), reassemble everything now with the Lord mounts properly screwed
into the firewall, tack the firewall in when you're satisfied you haven't
screwed up, disassemble everything firewall forward again and glass(or whatever)
the firewall in permanently. I think I've talked myself in to trying this
on my winter project--Temp #3. Never have been a big nose ring fan. Needs
some research. There's got to be a reason why this set-up lost favor however,
since technically it looks superior to me. But then again, I could be
wrong.

Re: OS 160 soft mount question

I'm currently running ho'made Hyde
mounts. I used to run (4) Lord mounts on an oversized back-plate and
no nose ring on my 60 sized stuff--and liked them very much. Very
clean. Does anyone still make them for the bigger stuff? I
haven't looked into it lately. Didn't Sullivan buy the rights?
CRS disease. In a couple of cases when we first got in to soft
mounting, I was able to do a straight addition of Lord mounts to the back of
my regular, hard mount and re-drill and tap new engine mount holes further
back in the mount. Worked fine if you had the engine originally
mounted on the front of the mount. I think some guys used (3) Lord
mounts with a nose ring and (4) without. The nice thing about those is
there isn't ever a direct connection to the airframe. Man, I DO need to look
in to these again!

Yes, in the pattern community Hyde mounts could be considered the
best option. My personal recommendation is: do NOT hard mount
the engine. There are other options there, but the Hyde
mount could be the best option for your particular
situation. Note: I am not sponsored by Mr. Hyde.
