We were looking for ANY way to quiet those suckers
down. My deal was running a RE short stroke Rossi in a heavy, clean
E-HUGE-1A and turning an 11-7.5 wood prop 18,000+ on the backside of a
Split-S. It was great. LOUD--but great. The pipes would
RING. Prop flutter was an issue along with airframe and pipe noise,
engine speed, etc., etc......... No question the newer stuff is more capable and
the patterns more challenging--but I don't know if they are more FUN.
Part of the enjoyment was going out and making some serious
racket.

excessive noise was prop (rpm & diameter). The actual engine noise

to quiet things down, one of the areas we looked at was intake noise. We
used to use a stretch on filter housing with small filter disks that helped
the noise problems with the added benefit of keeping crap out of the
engine--gee, what a concept. Are there any such animals available now?
We fly off an old asphalt runway and there is the possibility something
significant was sucked into a brand new 170 and destroyed the piston, sleeve,
ring and bearing. First time for everything, I guess. The 60 sized
ones did not seem to affect performance.
<FONT
