question. On my 150 cc twin, when I use a smaller prop that rips, the sound is
unreal, sort of a cross between a full scale racing plane and a jet. We all

always share our appreciation of the noise.

It's Friday--going to Omaha--I was thinking about
what it was about the noise we liked: My Company is oriented to designing and
implementing Automotive Conveyor Systems(KC--Conveyortown USA) and most
of our union Millwrights and Ironworkers have Harleys(we also have the KC
Plant's maint. contract). These guys will go buy a new $20,000.00+ bike,
ride it directly to the mod shop and put on straight pipes. What'd ya do
THAT for? "So it sounds like a MOTORCYCLE!" Pattern
ships used to scream--it was what a pattern airplane was SUPPOSED to sound
like........but our ears used to ring for a few days following a contest then
also.........Have a great weekend and thanks again for all the
help.

We were looking for ANY way to quiet those
suckers down. My deal was running a RE short stroke Rossi in a
heavy, clean E-HUGE-1A and turning an 11-7.5 wood prop 18,000+ on the
backside of a Split-S. It was great. LOUD--but great. The
pipes would RING. Prop flutter was an issue along with airframe and
pipe noise, engine speed, etc., etc......... No question the newer
stuff is more capable and the patterns more challenging--but I don't know
if they are more FUN. Part of the enjoyment was going
out and making some serious racket.

I was under the impression that the
real cause of excessive noise was prop (rpm & diameter). The
actual engine noise and exhaust setup (by todays typical standard) was not
the significant cause of noise - the prop is the culprit.
Jim

we looked at was intake noise. We used to use a stretch on filter
housing with small filter disks that helped the noise problems with the
added benefit of keeping crap out of the engine--gee, what a concept.
Are there any such animals available now? We fly off an old
asphalt runway and there is the possibility something significant was
sucked into a brand new 170 and destroyed the piston, sleeve, ring and
bearing. First time for everything, I guess. The 60 sized ones
did not seem to affect performance.
<FONT
