five years, we have been<br>
holding pattern contests using the SPA maneuvers but<br>
without the aircraft restrictions or age categories. Last year<br>
we had four one-day contests in the state. Initially we<br>
awarded bonus points for aircraft that conformed to SPA<br>
standards. Now it has become an open contest for any<br>
pattern type aircraft.<br>
<br>
The bad side of not conforming to SPA standards is the<br>
gradual creep towards larger, more<br>
sophisticated pattern aircraft. On the other hand the larger<br>
IMAC type aircraft don't seem to have an advantage with<br>
doing SPA maneuvers.<br>
<br>
Some of us find these contests are more pleasurable than<br>
traditional AMA pattern. But regardless of preference,<br>
these contests have renewed interest in all type of pattern in<br>
the area. The reestablishment of the Lincoln AMA pattern<br>
is the result of the modified SPA contests.<br>
<br>
There is talk of modifying pattern classes for something<br>
more enticing. It is not needed. Simply sanction a Class C<br>
contest and use the SPA maneuvers. It is fun and it may<br>
encourage more traditional pattern participation. <br>
