The problem of judging no-shows is in the CD's
domain. Only he can really address it. It escapes me how a contestant can get to
the line without getting the contestant package. No contestant ID = no
fly!

Although it appears that contest management could
reassign no-show slots on Sunday night, it does not create an unreasonable delay
on Monday morning. Things are pretty hectic from Sunday afternoon until mid
morning on Monday. Much of the time contestants are delayed by travel problems
or by personal/family problems. Why further add to their woes? There will always
be a few last minute problems to be resolved.

The Nats are a very big deal to a lot of people.
Dreams are both fulfilled and shattered. Most contestants are in a high
adrenaline state. While failing to fulfill a judging assignment is an
inconvenience to contest management, it is time of crisis for the contestants
whose expectations have been shattered.

As a Line Director I get to observe the stress and
strain that many experience. I feel for them and share their emotions, both
positive and negative. The contestant that is unable to face his peers after a
disaster day deserves our sympathy more than our criticism.

BTW, the guys that step up and fill those extra
judging slots are the heroes of the day.

I don't like the idea of a mandatory $50 judging performance bond for our
National contest...

Don't see how to mitigate further against a guy forgetting a judging
assignment, especially given the great info packets that we received - it was
all there. Five minutes finding your name on the sheets and marking them up
and you knew where and when to be there!

Given a mandatory sign in at the Farm House on arrival in Muncie, and
a mandatory pilot's meeting Sunday night, it's hard to see how a no-show
should have been a surprise on Monday morning. Seems there were lots of
opportunities to count noses before Monday dawn...

Maybe a getting a list of those who didn't sign in before pilot's meeting//
and during the meeting ID'ing those pilots who didn't go by the
farm house (can't be many - call their names at the pilot meeting to see if
they're there?) , and confirm Monday's judging assignments (either by calling
names and getting responses or by a posted list with a place for the assigned
judge to initial...?)

And... this way, while the pilot meeting is still going on, there's max
opportunity to ID a replacement judge.
