<pre>Although the GSAL list was not a part of the recent discussion, they
might benefit from the following;
I spoke to Jack Humphries this afternoon, one of our CIAM reps (Aero
Club of Canada) for FAI. He just returned from a big to-do in France
celebrating the 100th anniversary of FAI. Pretty nice celebration
apparently, considering it included representation from all air sports.
Anyways, we got to talking about the organization, here are some little
known facts:
- The only two disciplines that are growing in membership are is
para-gliding and model aircraft
- Modelers outnumber all other disciplines combined.
- As modelers, we pay out of our memberships our own governing bodies
collect (MAAC/AMA) to the FAI, maybe a buck or slightly more a head. We
pay significantly less than say a full scale aerobatic pilot (it’s
weighted/calculated on the number of member participants).
- We, as a modeling group, are the largest contributor to the FAI
organization.
What this implies (now more than ever) is that it will not be long
before "we" run the FAI. IT will be interesting five years from now.
Where before we were looked upon as some child that could be placated
and shooed away, FAI has been forced to reckon with us, as we now are
the majority membership. Think about that for a moment. Obviously there
is more to this picture, but it should become clear to the nay-sayers
just how far off base they are. We collectively have an opportunity to
move forward. More to the point, so has the rest of the world who fly
large scale aerobatics.
As a result of the recent F3M proposal, it is likely that this coming
spring a set of provisional rules will be released allowing an
opportunity to iron out the bugs. It usually takes a couple of years to
accomplish this. One thing is for sure, at least 4 contests with
participation from at least 5 countries must be evident in order to have
a chance at a sanction.
Also, there is resitance within CIAM to approve adding additional FAI
world championships to the roster, and are very motivated to ask "what
would we like to drop/replace in order to install another catagory.
F3B, although I like it and compete occasionally, is on it's last legs I
suspect. So apparently is scale control line. Events that attract less
than 5 countries automatically come up for review.
